Synopsis 03: Intergold (I) Ltd.
Intergold, a well known brand in gold and diamond jewellery, is a major exporter of diamonds and jewellery from India. The company has manufacturing facility which has two divisions situated at Andheri in Mumbai, India. Diamond division caters to diamond market of cut & polished diamonds. Jewellery division with 80% of the company's turnover at the time of study also had around 60% of the people employed.
To carry out scientific study in the jewellery division of the company to have a fair estimate of present capacity of its manufacturing facility. Production standards were developed and the capacity of the plant was assessed on a realistic basis taking into account these standards.
Plant capacity was arrived at after working out department wise production norms. This highlighted the departments or operations that could become bottleneck and also the ones having excess capacity. The large gap of over 100% between the existing output and possible norms was made explicit.
